1.  Seal Any Openings to the Outside

Pests have a way of finding any opening to get inside of your house. Even mice are able to squeeze through narrow crevices, especially when they feel the warm air coming through the space, and insects like roaches need only a very tiny hole or crack to make their way inside.

To deny the pests a way into your house, walk around the interior and exterior to find any small openings, paying particular attention around window frames, doorways, and spaces around your pipes. You can use caulk to fill in smaller holes and cracks, while weatherstripping can be used around doors and windows to fill in the gaps.

2.  Make Sure There Is No Food Left Out

Along with the warm air being emitted from your house, any food left out in your kitchen or placed in garbage cans outside of your door will attract all sorts of insects and rodents. Since food is scarcer in the wintertime, they will be on the lookout for an easy source.

To discourage the roaches, mice, and other pests from seeing your house as an all-you-can-eat buffet, make sure that you do not leave any food out in your house, especially overnight when the pests are more likely to try to get inside. Also, try to place your outdoor trash cans away from your house. If this is not possible, keep tight lids on the cans, or place a brick on the lid if it is loose.

Even if you are vigilant about making sure there is no readily available food and sealing up any known cracks and crevices, mice, roaches, and other pests can still find their way inside of your home while in search of warmth, shelter, and sustenance.
