Worried About Termites? 3 At-Home Methods To Battle Against Termites
Termites provide a horrible threat to your home. They can ruin the structural integrity of your home and need to be addressed right away. Although termites should be addressed by an exterminator if you want to save your home, there are some at-home methods that you can use as well.
#1 Protect Your Furniture
Termites can not only eat the wood that compromises the foundation of your home, they can also eat other sources of wood inside of your home, such as furniture. If you have wood furniture inside of your home, such as dressers, bookshelves or other items, you are going to want to protect them.
Take some petroleum jelly, and rub it onto your wood furniture just like you would wood polish. Don't rub it in until it is dry; put a semi-thick layer of petroleum jelly on your furniture. Let it sit for a couple of days and then rub it in and polish your furniture. This should help keep termites away from your furniture since petroleum jelly contains phenol, a chemical that termites do not enjoy.
#2 Set Up Traps
You can draw termites away from your home by setting up the appropriate traps. Termites enjoy eating paper and cardboard as much as they enjoy eating wood as these products contain cellulose. If you want to trap some termites yourself and kill them, set up some cardboard traps near your home. The termites will fill up the cardboard, and you can burn the termites to kill them. This can take a while; however, it can be a great way to kill a bunch of termites all at once.
#3 Set Up Boric Acid
Boric acid is something that termites do not enjoy. It can damage termite's nervous system and kill them. To get rid of termites, you can mix together boric acid and water. Then, paint the mixture on the wooden surfaces outside of your home. For example, you can take a paint brush and paint all of the siding on your home with this boric acid mixture. You can also apply it to your deck and other wood features outside. When termites try to eat the wood with boric acid on it, they will be killed.
When dealing with boric acid though, you should wear a mask and gloves. You don't want to inhale the boric acid yourself. Boric acid is not good for your lungs either, so be careful while handling it.
The three methods above are a few ways that you can fight back against termites in your home along with professional treatment. For more information, visit a website like http://www.craigandsons.com.
