Keeping Pests Away From Your Swimming Pool

If you have a swimming pool on your property, you most likely enjoy using it to take a relaxing dip on hot summer days. One thing that can ruin a swimming session rather fast is the discovery that there are dead pests in the water. Often critters like chipmunks, frogs, or mice will try to get liquid refreshment in a swimming pool, leading them to their unfortunate drowning as a result. Here are some steps you can take to keep your swimming pool area free of intruders so you do not need to deal with a rescue or carcass removal from your luxury area.

Take Time To Clean

Make it a habit to clean the area around your pool frequently, especially if you allow food in the area. If you seem to be having a lot of difficulty with floating pests in the pool, you may want to reconsider where you have a snack for a while. Remove all trash from around the pool after each swimming session. Wipe down tables so there are no crumbs remaining. If you have a trash can near the pool, lock it in a shed before you leave the area to help reduce the risk of a pest intrusion.

Remove Any Hideaways

If there are spots around your pool that small creatures could use as a shelter, you will want to remove them or make them less attractive to pests so they are not inclined to stick around the area. Trim back any bushes or trees along the perimeter of your pool deck area to help keep pests from using them as a bridge to the area when looking for a drink.

If you have a woodpile in your yard, move it further away from the pool if you feel it is too close for comfort. If there is a nearby shed, pests inside may make their way to the pool. Stop this by checking the exterior of the shed for cracks. Add caulk to any voids so pests will not utilize the shed as a nearby home.

Use A Cover

The best way to keep pests away from your pool is to cover it when it is not in use. Keep the cover nearby and make it a rule with all family members to place it over the water before they leave the area. It is important to have the pool covered during nighttime hours as this is when many creatures venture out to look for food and water.
